The long hours may have been difficult, but it was worth it. As the mare walked home in the setting sun, she reflected on the faces she had seen throughout the day. Some ponies waited anxiously for the mail, a bright grin peeking from their mouth when they saw the letters she brought. A few grimaced, faced with taxes or unwanted news. One unhappy colt had broken in to tears at one of her letters, though whether from relief or sorrow she could not say.
These little interactions, the emotions rippling across faces, made the mare feel more connected to the town she lived in. Every curl at the corner of a mouth reminded her that life went on for other ponies, ponies outside her circle of friends she might never know closely. She cherished every moment that she got to be a part of that grand interconnectedness, a crucial unseen piece of the puzzle that held so many lives together. Of all the things she saw, though, she cherished the smiles the most.
She lifted her head to gaze at her house ahead, and saw a small figure silhouetted against the waning light. The figure sprang toward her down the road, and she caught it in an embrace. As they continued wordlessly down the road, the mare smiled and knew that as much as she enjoyed delivering happiness around Ponyville, there would always be one smile she cherished above all others.
Derpy draped one wing gently over Dinky and they walked toward home. Together.
